Jubbah Rock Art Site
UNESCO World Heritage site with 8,000-year-old petroglyphs among the Middle East's finest rock art.
About This Destination
Jubbah Rock Art Site at Jabal Umm Sinman is part of the UNESCO World Heritage "Rock Art in the Hail Region," featuring petroglyphs more than 8,000 years old. Archaeologist Juris Zarins called Jubbah "the number-one or number-two site in the whole of the Middle East" for rock art concentration and importance. The site overlooks what was once a freshwater lake, and ancient carvings depict cattle, hunters, and wildlife that thrived in the greener landscape of prehistoric Arabia. Thousands of petroglyphs and inscriptions cover the rock faces in various scripts including Musnad, Aramaic-Nabataean, South-Arabian, and Thamudic. These images provide invaluable insights into the lives, beliefs, and environment of early Arabian Peninsula inhabitants spanning millennia. The scenes show hunting parties, domesticated animals, and daily life activities. Visitor facilities include walkways and viewing platforms that protect the art while allowing close observation. Guided tours explain the significance and dating of different carving periods.
